The Social Security Administration ("SSA") is rolling out stronger identity verification procedures to better protect your benefits from fraud and ensure faster processing of your claims.

So, What Are the New Changes?

The SSA is updating its identity verification procedures to increase security for both Social Security Disability claims and direct deposits changes. Here's what you need to know:

  • IIf you apply for SSD benefits or make changes to your direct deposit, you may need to verify your identity. If you can't use the my Social Security online system, you will be required to visit your local SSA office in person to prove your identity.
  • For direct deposit changes, the SSA is speeding up the process. What used to take 30 days to process will now be completed in just one business day for both online and in person requests.

Why Are These Changes Important?

The SSA has recognized the need for better security and quicker service. As Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, stated, Americans deserve to have their Social Security records protected with integrity and urgency. These new steps will help prevent fraud while providing faster and more secure services to those who rely on SSDI benefits.

What Does This Mean for You?

Staring March 31, 2025, the SSA will fully enforce its new identity verification procedures. If you are applying for SSD benefits and cannot use the online system, you will need to start your claim by phone.
