Managing Your Treatment

Building Your Medical Case History

Helping You Manage Your Social Security Disability Claim

The process of qualifying for Social Security Disability benefits can take many months, or even years, if you are turned down and pursue the appeals process. It is important to managing your medical treatment to support your claim while you work your way through the Social Security Administration (SSA) system.

Managing Your Case: What You Can Do

We recommend that you:

  • Visit your doctor on a regular basis. By seeing a physician at least every other month, you create a complete medical record.
  • Document progress or lack of progress. Make sure your doctor records any change in your condition. If you are not getting better, or your condition is getting worse, it will be in your case history for the next stage of your disability claim.
  • Obtain proper treatment. Showing that you are getting physical therapy, vocational rehabilitation, medications, surgery, or other care to improve your condition will impress upon the SSA or an administrative law judge that you want to get better.

The Social Security Administration bases its determinations largely on your medical records. A doctor's ongoing verification of your disability is the most persuasive argument.
