What are the Social Security Disability Programs?
Florida SSDI and SSI Attorneys
If you are unable to work because of impairment, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has several programs that provide monthly disability payments. At the Social Security Disability Law Firm, P.A., we practice only in the area of disability programs and have a record of success in getting disability benefits for our clients.
In your free initial consultation, you will meet directly with Miami Social Security lawyer Chris R. Borgia, who will fully explain the Social Security disability programs, and your right to benefits. Call us today at 1-866-MY-DISABILITY to set up an appointment.
Social Security Disability Programs
- Social Security disability insurance, also called SSD or SSDI, provides benefits for workers can no longer work because of a qualifying physical disability or mental health problem. The amount of benefits is based on the amount you have paid in to the system through Social Security taxes (payroll deductions).
- Supplemental security income, commonly known as SSI, is a federal welfare program. It provides benefits to the disabled, the blind and persons over age 65 who have never worked or have not worked enough quarters to qualify for SSDI. Applicants must fall below income and asset guidelines to qualify.
- Social Security disability for surviving spouses provides benefits to certain people who become disabled after their spouse or former spouse has died. The applicant must meet age, disability and length of marriage requirements.
How Do I Know if I Qualify? How Is "Disability" Defined?
The definition of "disability" is the same for all three Social Security disability programs. To qualify for benefits,
- The disability must be covered under the SSA's list of impairments
- The applicant must prove through an evaluation process that they are unable to work
- The applicant must prove that the disability will last at least 12 months or result in death
Attorney Borgia can fully explain these programs and whether you qualify, and assist at any stage, from initial determination through the appeals process.
